Description

Clematis 'Broughton Bride' is a 2m (7ft) high climber with delicate white bells lightly spotted with lilac from May to June, which open when mature. It is nicknamed "Bridal Veil" because of its light and floaty flowers.

This robust climber produces solitary flowers in open, trailing, shiny white bells, lightly spotted with lilac on the inside and 7cm (3in) in diameter, on the previous year's growth. Its deciduous, elongated, medium green, 8cm (3in) long leaves are carried by twisting stems that twine around their support with tendrils. After flowering, decorative seed heads topped with a silvery grey feathery style appear.

Clematis 'Broughton Bride' likes clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny position with its base in the shade. Plant ground cover plants to achieve this. Watch out for aphids!

Clematis 'Broughton Bride' decorates walls, fences, bamboo pyramids, or the trunk of a tree when combined with other varieties or a climbing rose.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilise applications, which stimulates foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture, which promotes disease.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Broughton Bride' is best planted in spring or autumn 5cm (2in) deep, with the root ball placed flat on the ground rather than vertically as usual and its head in the sun and foot in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. Remove dead or damaged stems after flowering.
