Description

Clematis diversifolia 'River Star' is a small climbing plant, 1.5m (5ft) in height, which bears large, pale-mauve flowers with cream anthers and darker veins.

This robust plant develops lanceolate, pale-green, deciduous leaves, 10cm (4in) long, carried by thin and flexible stems that need to be trained. From June to September, it bears large, single flowers with 6 mauve tepals with cream anthers, heavily veined with violet. They are 8cm (3in) in diameter, and grow on the current year's branches.

Clematis 'River Star' likes light, deep, fertile, clay-siliceous soil. It likes a sunny position. It prefers cool roots, so place ground cover plants around it to provide shade. Watch out for aphids.

Clematis 'River Star' perfectly dresses up walls, fences, bamboo pyramids, or the trunk of a tree. It looks wonderful alongside other varieties of clematis, or paired with a climbing rose.

Avoid excessive fertilisation that stimulates foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch in order to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilting disease.

Planting and care

Plant Clematis 'River Star' in spring or autumn, at a depth of 5cm (2in), with the root ball laid flat on the ground rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to assist the plant in clinging on its own later. The subsequent pruning, in March, will involve cutting back all the stems from the previous year to 20cm (8in) from the ground, above a pair of buds.
