Hello, After a disappointment with another clematis (pale blue/previous order) in the same spot, I am wondering about the planting method... In order for it to cover a mature 2m (7ft) tall and wide shrub, can we, or NOT, plant it on the north side at the base of the shrub (sacred bamboo), meaning in complete shade? Will it have enough strength, when it starts growing again, to develop a sufficient stem to quickly find the light on the shrub, and not wither precisely due to lack of sunlight? I'm afraid of repeating a mistake...! Thank you very much.

Description

Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid', also known as 'Pink Chiffon', is a climbing plant that boasts a long and generous flowering period, even in partial shade. Its large and charming pink flowers bloom throughout summer, bringing a touch of romance to any structure that this hardy perennial can cover.

This cultivar, dating back to the 1950s, originates from England. It is the result of hybridisation carried out by Percy Picton, a gardener at Hagley Hall. It belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. It can reach a height of 2m (7ft). This lovely variety bears large single flowers, measuring approximately 10cm (4in) in diameter. They consist of six tepals that barely overlap, have pointed tips, and slightly undulate margins. They open fully in a star shape, revealing a cream stamen with purple anthers at the centre. This contrasts perfectly with the gradually fading pink of the tepals under the sun's influence. Fruits develop after the flowers, decorating the foliage until winter. The deciduous leaves are composed of 3 to 5 leaflets, which are a beautiful bright green. They are borne on voluble stems that twine around their support.

Like most of its relatives, 'Hagley Hybrid' prefers light, deep, moist, and fertile soil that is preferably neutral. It appreciates a sunny or partially shaded exposure (its colours will be more intense), with the base of the plant in the shade. It is frost-resistant and can withstand cold temperatures. However, it does not tolerate stagnant moisture, so the substrate must be well-drained and watering should be moderate (if necessary, especially in the first year).

Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid' generously covers various structures and enhances them with its soft and tender shades. It pairs perfectly with other clematis varieties and climbing roses, ensuring a full season of flowers in every corner of the garden. Pair it with the purple flowers of C. 'Sweet Summer Love', the poetic forms of C. 'Queen Mother', or enjoy the porcelain complexion of Shisandra grandiflora.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or semi-shady exposure. Clematis like to have cool roots. In a sunny location, shade the base of your clematis with a ground cover plant or a perennial geranium, or even a tile. If you place it in a partially shaded area, the pink of the flowers will be more intense. It will fade in full sun. However, it does not appreciate scorching exposure. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), and lighten it with good compost and coarse sand. Position the plant and cover the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Water generously and regularly during the first few weeks. Do not overwater as this can lead to the development of a fungus at the collar.

Clematis cling on their own with their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with a trellis support or let them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh against the trunk for the clematis to climb on. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.
