Plant received very well packaged. Half of it is dead and the other half has small leaves indicating it is alive. There is good hope of having beautiful flowers in the near future.

Description

The Clematis 'The Vagabond' is a beautiful climbing perennial, compact, with large deep violet flowers veined with purple-red.

From June to September, this robust plant, 2.5m (8ft), forms a wall of star-shaped flowers with six petals, deep violet veined with purple-red and chartreuse anthers, 18 cm (7in) in diameter. Its deciduous ovate, lanceolate, green leaves, 10cm (4in) long, are carried by rambling stems that twine around their support with tendrils. At the end of flowering, fruits appear, topped with a silvery grey feathery style, very decorative.

Originally from the northern hemisphere, the Clematis The Vagabond likes a clay-siliceous, well-worked, deep, fresh and fertile soil, in a sunny position with the base in the shade. To achieve this, plant ground cover plants. The east is suitable. Watch out for aphids!

The Clematis The Vagabond, "Queen of the Climbers", perfectly adorns trellises, fences, obelisks, arches, trees, and bushes. In a pot on a terrace, it will work wonders! Combine several species of clematis or marry them with red climbing roses!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisation that stimulates foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilt disease.

Planting and care

Spring or autumn is the best time to plant the Clematis 'The Vagabond'. You should plant it at a depth of 8cm (3in), with the root ball laid flat on the soil instead of vertically as usual. Ensure the top is exposed to the sun while the base remains in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. In March, the subsequent pruning will involve cutting back all the stems from the previous year to 20cm (8in) above the ground.
