I received it in a bit of a sorry state, there was a broken branch at the base, then the other one dried up, I had nothing left, but I placed the pot among other plants and it started again, it grew well, now I'm waiting to see its flowers in spring.

Clematis 'Black Prince' is an exceptional viticella clematis with large purple flowers with black anthers. A climbing bush that reaches 2m (7ft) high and will add brightness to evergreen foliage.
This robust climber develops deciduous leaves with 3 ovate pale green, 8cm (3in) long leaflets on twining shoots that wrap around their support with tendrils. From June to August, large single, open, cup-shaped, drooping, purple, 6cm (2in) flowers with 4 tepals and black anthers grow on the current year's branches.
Clematis 'Black Prince' likes clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist and fertile soil in a sunny position with its base in shade. Planting ground cover plants will help with this. It is well-suited for an east-facing aspect. Beware of aphids!
Clematis Black Prince will bring a touch of originality when combined with Lonicera nitida Baggesen Gold on a trellis, fence, wall, or other support. You can also pair it with pink clematis varieties such as 'Abundance'.
Tips: Avoid excessive fertiliser applications which can stimulate foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch, to prevent excessive moisture, which can promote disease.

Botanical data
Clematis 'Black Prince' should be planted in spring or autumn 8cm (3in) deep, with the root ball laid flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant climb on its own later. In March, cut back all the previous year's stems to 20cm (8in) from the ground, above a pair of buds.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
