Description

Clematis 'Super Nova' is a recently obtained hybrid of C.viticella from the Netherlands. It has numerous fairly large, single flowers in a rare and contrasting colour combination. The pale blue-violet sepals are marked with a wide, deep blue-violet central line and edged with the same hue. The flower centre features dark brown anthers. It is a beautiful climbing plant that flowers for a long time, from June to September, and tolerates sunny exposures quite well. Its modest size allows garden and container cultivation.

The clematis genus belongs to the buttercup family. 'Super Nova' is a horticultural variety derived from Clematis viticella which belongs to the group of clematis that flower in summer on the current year's growth. It is a semi-woody, climbing perennial plant that will reach 3m (10ft) high with a spread of 1m².

This clematis bears viticella-type, medium-sized flowers with a diameter of 7cm (3in) from June to September. The flowers are solitary or grouped in cymes, and held erect. They have 6 bicoloured blue-violet sepals in light and deeper shades which are star-shaped with very dark anthers in their stamen centre. The flowers are followed by decorative, feathery, greyish-silver seed heads. The leaves are simple and palmate, with irregularly toothed edges. This clematis clings to its support or host plant using petioles transformed into tendrils.

Plant clematis alongside your climbing roses to extend the flowering of your walls and pergolas until the end of summer. Clematis is a diverse genus, with varieties available in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. 'Super Nova' is easily grown in the garden, and thanks to its relatively modest size, it will also thrive in a container on a balcony or next to an entrance door to welcome visitors with its long-lasting flowering.

Planting and care

Plant 'Super Nova' in the sun, in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, shading the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and may wilt in overly wet soil.

Plant your clematis by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost. Water regularly during the first few weeks, but be careful of stagnant water which can cause collar rot. Cover the base of climbing clematis with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of clematis wilt, while promoting vigorous new shoots from the crown. After planting, prune the stems of deciduous climbing clematis to about 30 cm above a healthy pair of buds. Mulch in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Train the stems, without crushing them, until the plant can climb on its own. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

This variety blooms on new growth in summer, so prune it in March to 25 cm (10in) above the ground (a little shorter on older subjects), cutting cleanly with secateurs above two healthy buds. Voles and caterpillars can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests.
