Really disappointed! Very small in size, only one stem, and the leaves are very dry. Planted with care, I'm really worried about its survival.

Description

Clematis viticella 'Alba Luxurians' is a beautiful Italian climbing clematis, reaching a height of 3m (10ft). It blooms late to adorn fences and other supports with beautiful white flowers with green tips and black anthers.

This robust climber develops deciduous leaves with 3 ovate dark green leaflets, 8cm (3in) long. They are carried by twisting stems that twine around their support using tendrils. From July to September, large single flowers with 4 sepals, in an open cup shape, bloom on the current year's branches. They are white with green tips and black anthers, 7cm (3in) in diameter.

Clematis viticella 'Alba Luxurians' prefers light, deep, fertile and clay-siliceous soil, in a sunny position with its base in the shade. Planting ground cover plants is a good idea to achieve this. Beware of aphids!

Clematis viticella 'Alba Luxurians' will bring a touch of modernity and lightness when grown with a shrub.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertiliser application as it can stimulate foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch, to prevent excessive moisture, which can promote clematis wilt.

Planting and care

Clematis viticella 'Alba Luxurians' should be planted in spring or autumn, 8cm (3in) deep, with the root ball laid flat on the ground instead of vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train the stems loosely to help the plant climb on its own in the future. In March, cut back all the stems from the previous year to 20cm (8in) from the ground, above a pair of buds.
