Plant received in a sorry state. Lots of branches but very few leaves, half of which had fallen off when unpacking and the other half were eaten and damaged. It's a shame we can't send you photos, they speak volumes sadly.

Description

The Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' is a climbing woody stem plant with fast alternate growth that bears graceful clusters of mauve flowers with yellow centres throughout the summer.

Originally from Brazil, this delicate False Jasmine develops long, flexible, almost voluble branches that can be easily trained. It has semi-evergreen, ternate leaves that are 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) long, narrow, shiny, and green. The star-shaped flowers, mauve with yellow centres, similar to those of potatoes, are grouped in loose clusters. At the end of flowering, very decorative white-yellow fruits appear.

The Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' grows in cool, light, and humus-bearing, well-draining soil in full sun and sheltered from cold winds. Water during dry spells but avoid stagnant water around the base. Pruning for balance is sufficient.

The Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' climbs trellises, arches, pergolas, stair railings, or balconies. In pots on a terrace, to fully enjoy its intense fragrance.

Tips: If you bring it inside, make sure to provide it with high humidity as the leaves and flowers quickly wilt in dry atmospheres. Regularly spray it with non-limestone water.

Planting and care

The Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin' should be planted in spring in a cool, light, humus-bearing and acidic soil, in full sun and sheltered from cold winds. Mulch the base and water during dry weather, but avoid stagnant water around the base. Pruning to maintain balance is sufficient. In a 50cm (20in) pot, use a mixture of ericaceous soil and leaf compost, which should be cool and light. From early spring until mid-September, enrich with special ericaceous plant fertiliser according to the doses indicated on your package. It requires regular watering throughout the year. During winter, place it in a conservatory or a temperate greenhouse, at around 16°C (60.8°F) and with plenty of light. Regularly spray the foliage with non-calcareous water, as this will prevent attacks from red spiders.
