Description

The Lonicera Caprifolium, the traditional honeysuckle of our gardens, is a lovely climbing plant, widely found in Europe, with early flowering.

This honeysuckle can reach up to 6 m (20ft). Its dark green foliage on the top and bluish on the underside is deciduous. The flowers appear in April-May, and are cream-coloured, shaded with pink, grouped in unique bunches at the end of the stems. In the evening, the flowers release a delicate fragrance. After flowering, small red berries develop as fruits.

Honeysuckles are planted in humus-rich soil, in a sunny to semi-shady location. Don't hesitate to prune just after flowering to encourage new shoots.

Honeysuckles prefer to be mixed with bushes or to climb on hedges rather than being trained against walls.

Planting and care

Honeysuckles thrive in any good deep garden soil, with little or no limestone. Prune them back each year for maintenance. However, it is possible to severely cut back an older subject to completely renew its framework. This restoration should be done over one or two years. Honeysuckles are hardy climbing plants, ideal for quickly dressing a wall or pergola. Provide them with support, they will cling on by themselves. We love them for their long flowering period and wonderful fragrance. Our advice: Plant it near your terrace to fully enjoy its intoxicating scent, which intensifies in the morning and evening.
