This jasmine is a running shrub for mild climates, remarkable for its variegated foliage of golden yellow and green, which is more or less evergreen in winter. In spring, it bears large, primrose-yellow, single to semi-double, lightly fragrant flowers. Its long branches do not cling on their own: they can be trained against a support, allowed to trail over a wall, or pruned as a bush. Outside of mild regions, it is best grown in a large pot and protected in winter. Hardiness: down to around -10°C for the crown.

Description

Jasminum mesnyi GOLD TOUCH® 'CLDO' is a primrose jasmine with golden-yellow foliage, irregularly variegated with green. Its will brighten up a wall, a bank, or a large container for a good part of the year. Its primrose-yellow flowers appear in spring, on long, supple shoots that can be trained or left to trail. It is an easy-to-grow, undemanding plant, but rather sensitive to cold.

This jasmine belongs to the Oleaceae family. The type species, Jasminum mesnyi, is also known as the primrose jasmine, primrose-flowered jasmine, or Chinese jasmine. Its botanical synonym is Jasminum primulinum. In the wild, this plant grows in south-central China and Vietnam, under a subtropical climate. It is found in ravines and in open woodland, often on well-drained slopes. GOLD TOUCH® 'CLDO' is a selection from the AOBA nursery, protected and distributed by SAPHO. It is a running shrub, evergreen in mild climates, semi-evergreen when the winter is more pronounced. Its angular shoots are long, green when young, then becoming woody with age. They arch naturally, mingle with neighbouring shrubs, trail over a low wall, or can be trained against a trellis. Its height depends greatly on how it is managed: around 2 to 3m when left free-growing, more if the plant is grown against a support and pruned little. The leaves are opposite on the shoots and composed of three ovate to lanceolate leaflets. They are golden-yellow with variable green markings in the centre, attractive even outside the flowering period. The flowers open in April-May, sometimes as early as March in mild climates. Measuring 3 to 4 cm in diameter, they are yellow, single to semi-double, and emit a light fragrance, more discreet than common jasmine. Shoots that touch the ground can layer naturally; it is not a suckering plant, but it can spread widely if allowed to roam. The hardiness of this jasmine is limited: in very well-drained soil, quite dry in winter, and against a sheltered wall, the crown can withstand brief dips to around -10 to -12 °C. The aerial parts are more sensitive: foliage, young stems, and flower buds are destroyed at -7 °C.

Gold Touch® jasmine, if its shoots are guided, will climb over shrubs, trellises, arches, pergolas, or stair railings in favourable climates.  It can be interesting to let it trail from the top of a wall:  this avoids a lot of training work. If, on the other hand, it can be kept in check by pruning to form a handsome, bushy shrub, which is preferable when grown in a pot. In cold regions, it can be put on the terrace during summer and brought into a conservatory or greenhouse to overwinter. To accompany it, choose Cape Leadwort 'Dark Blue', Sollya heterophylla 'Ultra Blue', a small Florida clematis, or an evergreen clematis flowering in winter such as Clematis cirrhosa 'Wisley Cream'.

Planting and care

Plant Jasminum mesneyi 'Gold Touch' in open ground, preferably in spring, in mild regions. While its crown can withstand occasional temperatures of -10/-12°C, the vegetation is destroyed at -7°C, and consequently so are the flower buds that form in late winter. It can be planted in pots all year round. Plant it in deep, fertile, workable soil, and water it to help it establish. It requires well-drained soil, lightened with potting compost, and will thrive in a very sunny position sheltered from cold winds, or even in partial shade in warm climates. It tolerates lime in the soil well. If the winter is dry, water copiously as soon as the buds appear. Prune the oldest (brown) stems in late winter, at the start of growth. This plant tolerates drought fairly well once established, but will be more luxuriant if the soil remains slightly moist. Flowering is more abundant with a few hours of sun. Avoid exposing it to cold draughts. Outside the Mediterranean region or the Atlantic coast, plant this jasmine against a sheltered wall that will reflect some warmth to it.

For pot cultivation: choose a 50cm container, with a good, rich, moist and light potting compost, specially formulated for Mediterranean plants. From early spring until mid-September, feed with liquid fertiliser every 15 days, always onto moist compost. In summer, it does not need very abundant watering, as its growth period is mainly in winter and spring: water it regularly, but without excess. Jasmine is very vigorous even in a pot and can become bare at the base. In this case, prune the old branches, leaving only 3 young shoots. In winter, place it in a conservatory or cool greenhouse, at around 10°C and with plenty of light. Regularly mist the foliage with lime-free water to prevent red spider mite attacks.
