Description
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata 'Atropurpurea' is a climbing Virginia creeper, hardy, easy to grow, appreciated for its large wavy burgundy leaves, turning purple-red in autumn.
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata 'Atropurpurea' has wavy, deciduous leaves that are 20cm (8in) long, with burgundy red colour in spring. As the seasons progress, the foliage changes to bronze in summer and purple-red in autumn. Its insignificant cyme inflorescences give way to blue-black berries.
This Virginia creeper, hardy to -20°C (-4°F), grows in rich, moist, preferably clayey soil in sunny or semi-shaded locations. Unrestricted pruning at any time of the year keeps the plant in its space.
With its height of 15m (49ft), the Parthenocissus tricuspidata 'Atropurpurea' is used to cover walls and facades. If the wall is sound, there will be no damage due to the growth of the Virginia creeper. It protects the habitat from extreme heat and harsh winters.

Planting and care
The Parthenocissus tricuspidata 'Atropurpurea' should be planted in autumn or spring in a moist and well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. Be careful not to damage the root ball! Train the young plants until they can cling on their own. Monitor the growth of this very invasive climbing plant and pinch back any misdirected voluble stems.
