Description

The Passiflore insignis 'Pink Passion' is a relatively recent and rare hybrid variety that stands out for its original double star-shaped flowers in a bright fresh pink. It forms a liana of only 2 to 3 metres (7 to 10 feet) in height, and is therefore suitable for cultivation in a pot on a terrace or under a veranda, or in the ground wherever temperatures do not drop below -5°C (23°F).

Mostly originating from tropical areas of South America, passionflowers belong to the large family of passifloraceae, which includes 400 species and numerous spontaneous or horticultural hybrids. P. insignis is native to northern Bolivia.

The Passiflore insignis 'Pink Passion' is a robust and vigorous plant that tolerates hot summers. Voluble, it clings to its support with the help of tendrils, reaching a height of 2 to 3 metres (7 to 10 feet). It is characterized by its slender stems adorned with leaves divided into 3 pointed lobes of a shiny dark green. Its flowering extends from late April to September in the form of large flowers about 10 cm (4in) in diameter that constantly renew themselves on the plant. These double flowers are composed of petals in a bright pink and sepals of the same colour. The central crown is composed of short white filaments, dark violet at their base. The centre is occupied by green-yellow stamens. Once pollinated, the flowers give way to a few rare inedible fruits, oval and orange when ripe, measuring 3.5 cm (1in) in length and 2.5 cm (1in) in width.

This Hardy Passionflower, hardy down to -5°C (23°F), grows in any well-drained, light, fairly deep and not too dry soil, in a sunny and sheltered position. Pruning, at the end of flowering, consists of reducing the branches to maintain a beautiful habit. With a height of 2 to 3 metres (7 to 10 feet) and generous exotic flowering, the 'Pink Passion' passionflower is a wonderful plant for dressing up walls, fences, grilles, porches, and trellises. It is also highly appreciated in verandas where it will withstand cold winters without damage.

Planting and care

The 'Pink Passion' passionflower is a sun-loving and heat-loving plant that should be placed sheltered from cold and drying winds. Plant it in an ordinary, but deep, well-worked, well-amended, and well-drained soil. Hardy up to 8°C (46.4°F), it is suitable for container cultivation. Place it on a support to support the weight of vegetation. Direct its branches well onto the support as the growth is exuberant. Pruning before winter is recommended to maintain a reasonable size. Do not hesitate to cut back the main branches to facilitate growth. Remove dead or misplaced branches and aerate the plant by pruning excess branches. Beware of scale insects and whiteflies, as well as the cucumber mosaic virus. Treat preventively.
