Polet Children's Hoe

The hoe is the main tool for surface garden maintenance. It consists of a long handle at the end of which is attached a socket holding an acute-angled, rectangular iron plate, 10 to 20cm (4 to 8in) wide. It is used for "hoeing," which actually has two functions: aerating and weeding. The first involves breaking up the surface crust and turning over the soil to a depth of about ten centimetres to allow for better penetration of water and air into the soil. The second is used to remove weeds that invade flower beds and compete with plantings. The hoe is used by inserting the blade into the soil and pulling it towards oneself.
