The spade is an essential tool, designed for lifting, turning, and loosening and crumbing the soil deeply, in light soils and on small surfaces. Fertilizer (well-decomposed compost, organic fertilizer, horse manure) can be incorporated into the soil at the same time as it is turned over. The spade, with its sharp edges, is also used for digging, cutting roots, or pulling up certain vegetable plants (leeks, potatoes, carrots, turnips). This model consists of a natural ash handle, a wood known for its hardness and lightness, with a riveted feather socket metal ferrule where the sharpened blade, made of steel resistant to shocks, torsion, and corrosion thanks to its boron steel finish, is attached. To the right and left of the handle, the shovel blade has been hammered and flattened into a footrest, offering a non-sharp point of support for the foot. The handle, ending in a T, multiplies the force: it allows for leverage to drive the head into the ground using the foot. It is compostable, and the metal head is recyclable.
