Description

Vaccinium vitis-idaea, the lingonberry, is a beautiful mountain bush that reaches a height of about 30 cm (12 in).

When planted in suitable conditions (acidic soil, in shade or partial shade) it offers triple interest: its evergreen foliage, consisting of small, pointed, glossy leaves measuring 3cm (1.2 in), which are decorative all year round; its spring flowering in clusters of small pink flowers; and its edible fruits, lingonberries, which have a tart taste and are used in jams and sauces and are very decorative small, bright red berries.

Planting and care

The lingonberry must be planted strictly in a well-drained acidic soil, in a pine needle substrate or a mixture of ericaceous compost and wood chips or coir. Plant in a partially shaded site that will be moisture-retentive in summer. Of slow growth, it covers a large area by gradually extending its underground rhizomes. Its berries are edible.
