I planted it in October. It has taken well and is starting to flower. It's a fine young plant. Reine des Reinettes are good apple trees.

Very vigorous and productive variety. Fruits are about 7 cm (3in) in diameter, golden yellow with a red tint. Pale, juicy, fine and crunchy flesh, with a tangy taste. Taste is reminiscent of walnuts, pleasantly fragrant. Harvest begins in early September. Good storage after harvest.

Description

The Reine des Reinettes Apple Tree is a very vigorous and productive variety. Its fruits, about 7 cm (3in) in diameter, are red-yellow golden. Their flesh is pale, juicy, fine, and crisp. Tart, their taste resembles that of the walnut and is pleasantly fragrant. Its harvest starts at the beginning of ripeness, in early September. They keep very well after harvest and can be consumed until March.

The apple tree is native to Europe, especially in France where its presence has been attested since antiquity. The Reine des Reinettes Apple Tree was obtained in Holland around 1770. This country had been cultivating several varieties of Kroon apples for a long time, from which this variety originated. The numerous exchanges in the 19th century between France, Holland, and Belgium, in particular, are the origin of the presence in France of the Reine des Reinettes variety.

The Reine des Reinettes Apple Tree is an upright tree, giving it a very elegant and slender appearance. It is very productive, so it will need to be thinned to avoid small fruit size and the occurrence of diseases. Its hardiness makes it suitable for cultivation in northern regions of Europe, as well as in mountainous areas. Its foliage is composed of very large, oval, slightly hairy, green-brownish leaves on top, whitish-green underneath, deeply toothed.

Flowering occurs in April and is quite extensive. For this reason, the variety is one of the best pollinators for other apple trees. The flowering is not afraid of frost. The apple tree is therefore suitable for cultivation in the mountains. Self-sterile, the presence of apple trees whose flowering occurs at the same time is necessary. The varieties 'Golden Delicious', 'Idared', and 'Melrose' are suitable. Fruiting is early and begins in September. Rounded and elongated in shape, the apples have a silky skin, orange-yellow with some red stripes. They have an exotic aroma. This variety will prefer cold nights to reveal the full taste of its fruits.

These apples are particularly suitable for pastry preparation, especially delicious tarte tatin. They can of course be consumed fresh, in compotes, in jams, and in savoury dishes, in combination with cheeses, for example.

Apple trees offer such a choice of varieties, of forms, - columnar, erect to spreading -, and of vigour, from 1 m for container planting to over 10 m, and are used freely in all kinds of landscaping. In addition to their exceptional hardiness (-30°C), these trees produce a sumptuous white tinged with pink to bright pink flowering in April–May and fruits with varied flavours that can be eaten fresh or cooked as desired. Some apple varieties known as storage varieties also have the advantage of being edible almost until spring without processing. These trees prefer mild, misty climates, apart from recent varieties adapted to hot, dry climates of southern France. The apple tree is easier to grow than the pear tree thanks to later flowering and better tolerance of lime (up to 15% active lime). It can be positioned north-facing in southern France, except for espalier forms which should face south-east or south-west. Malus domestica prefers heavy, clayey, fertile and cool but well-drained soils. Quality of harvests depends on presence of a pollinating variety, soil fertility and also regularity of pruning or training. However, S-pur type varieties (columnar or sparsely branched) and open-grown varieties (free habit) need little or no pruning, so it is very easy even for an inexperienced gardener to obtain a good harvest. The only drawback is the number of diseases and pests able to affect apple trees, victims of their own success. But significant agronomic research efforts now make it possible to choose varieties resistant, notably to scab if you live in a particularly humid climate. It is important to consider vigour and rootstock tolerance to your soil if you wish to train your apple tree as a cordon or palmette or, conversely, obtain a large open-grown tree. Buying a tree already trained (standard, goblet, palmette...) represents a greater investment than buying a simple whip (1-year stem little or not branched) but saves a lot of time before fruiting!

Planting and care

Choose a sunny location for your Reine des Reinettes Apple Tree The soil can be slightly alkaline or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a large planting hole at least 3 times the size of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (compost, topsoil) and a base fertiliser like crushed horn. Do not bury the graft point. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, and even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of freezing periods. Container-grown plants can be planted year-round, except during periods of extreme heat or frost.

In winter, you can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, to improve fruiting. Watch out for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep picked fruits for storage. Store apples with the stem downwards on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool location, but frost-free.

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple removal of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
