Description

The 'Red Sensation' Columnar Apple Tree, also known as 'Ballerina Red Sensation' Dwarf Apple Tree, is a compact variety of columnar apple tree - very space-saving. It allows for good production in a small area. It adapts well to orchards, small gardens, hedges, terraces, pergolas,... It produces medium-sized, shiny red fruits. Their flesh is sweet and sour and fragrant. Harvest takes place in late September and extends until October. The 'Red Sensation' Columnar Apple Tree is self-fertile.

The apple tree is a native tree in Europe, particularly in France where its presence has been documented since antiquity. The 'Red Sensation' Columnar Apple Tree is a variety resulting from the hybrid series of Columnar Ballerina® Apple Trees, cross-bred with 'Red Jonathan'.

The 'Red Sensation' Columnar Apple Tree is a tree with a columnar habit, space-saving. When fully grown, thanks to its very low vigour, it measures 1.5m (4ft 11in) in height and its column does not exceed 90cm (35.4in) in diameter. It adapts well to both open ground and pots. It will therefore be perfect for orchards, small gardens, hedges, terraces, and pergolas.
Its foliage is composed of very large, ovate leaves, slightly fuzzy and greenish-brown on top, whitish-green underneath, deeply dentate.
Flowering occurs in April and May. It consists of white-pink flowers. The flowering is not afraid of frost. The apple tree is therefore suitable for cultivation in all regions. Self-fertile, the presence of other apple trees in its vicinity is not necessary.
Fruiting begins in late September and extends into October. The fruits are medium-sized, shiny red. Their flesh is sweet and sour and fragrant.

These apples are particularly suitable for pastries. They can of course be consumed cooked, in compotes, jams, fresh, in jellies, and in savory dishes, in combination with Normandy cheeses for example.

Planting and care

Choose a well sunny place for your 'Red Sensation' Columnar Apple Tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but without excess. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost...) and a base fertilizer such as crushed bark. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside of the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, this will improve fruiting. Watch out for possible aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery mildew caused by a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, this does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep picked fruits. Store apples with the stem downwards, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry and cool place but frost-free.
