Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree appreciated for its rapid growth, aromatic foliage and decorative bark. To plant it successfully, choose a sunny position, sheltered from excess moisture, in light, perfectly drained soil. The best time to plant it is in autumn or spring. Where to plant eucalyptus?
The position
Plant your eucalyptus in full sun, which is essential for vigorous growth and attractive foliage. Choose a sufficiently open position, taking its eventual size into account: some species become large trees, while others retain a more compact habit.
Also choose a position sheltered from the strongest winds during the first few years, while the tree develops a good root system. Once established, eucalyptus tolerates wind and salt spray well, depending on the species.
In a mild climate, it can easily be planted in the ground. In regions with colder winters, choose the hardiest species or grow the more frost-tender varieties in a large pot, such as E. citriodora or E. ficifolia.
The type of soil
Eucalyptus thrives in light, deep and perfectly drained soil. It dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground, especially in winter, as this encourages root rot.
It adapts to most soils, whether slightly acidic, neutral or even chalky, depending on the species. However, it grows less well in compact or constantly damp ground. In clay soil, improve drainage with gravel or pozzolana.
When to plant eucalyptus?
The best time to plant eucalyptus is in autumn, when the soil is still warm, encouraging good root development before winter. Planting is also possible in spring, once severe frosts have passed, particularly in regions with harsh winters.
How to plant eucalyptus in the ground?
- Carefully weed the planting area and loosen the soil to a depth of around 50 to 60 cm.
- Soak the rootball in a bucket of water for about ten minutes to rehydrate it thoroughly.
- Dig a planting hole approximately two to three times as wide as the rootball and slightly deeper.
- If your soil is heavy or retains water, place a layer of gravel or pozzolana in the bottom of the hole to improve drainage.
- Carefully remove the eucalyptus from its pot and gently loosen the roots if they are circling around the rootball.
- Place the tree in the centre of the hole, ensuring that the collar is level with the soil surface.
- Backfill with the excavated soil.
- Gently firm the soil around the rootball with your hands or foot.
- Make a watering basin, then water generously, even if the soil is damp.
- Install a stake if the plant is tall or the position is exposed to wind.
- Finish with an organic mulch to limit evaporation and weed growth.
- Water regularly during the first two years to encourage good root development.
How to plant eucalyptus in a pot?
Less vigorous varieties can be grown in a container :
- For container growing, choose a large pot with drainage holes, filled with a light, free-draining growing medium. Watering will need to be more regular than for plants grown in the ground.
