More information

An original cactus, all bumpy, with a compact, cylindrical habit, slightly thorny or even thornless, giving it a soft appearance. Under good conditions, an older specimen will produce adorable little red flowers. Well-suited to pot cultivation, it requires a well-draining substrate, a bright position, and moderate watering during the growth period. As it does not tolerate cold and damp well, it should be overwintered in a frost-free location. Hardiness: down to -6/-7°C at its lowest in very dry soil.

Description

Native to Mexico, Mammillaria 'Toluca' is a rare form of Mammillaria polythele, prized for its compact habit and its nearly thornless character. Its bright green epidermis, intensely tuberculate and dotted with small woolly areoles, gives it a soft and unique texture. When it decides to flower, this cactus produces charming bright red to pink blooms, forming a dazzling crown. This small cushion offers refined aesthetics while requiring minimal care from cactus enthusiasts.

Mammillaria polythele 'Toluca' belongs to the Cactaceae family. The species originates from Mexico, specifically the arid regions of the country's centre. This 'Toluca' cultivar differs due to the scarcity of its thorns. At maturity, this plant displays a slightly upright globular habit, reaching a height of 15 to 30 cm and a diameter of around 15 cm. Its growth is slow, and in cultivation, particularly in pots, its dimensions remain more modest, often around 10 to 15 cm in height and width. The surface of this Mammillaria consists of quadrangular tubercles, generally devoid of thorns, with areoles covered in white wool. The root system is typical of cacti, composed of fibrous roots adapted for rapid water absorption during rare rainfall. Mammillaria polythele 'Toluca' does not produce offsets, remaining solitary throughout its life. The small flowers appear in spring. They measure between 20 and 25 mm in diameter and are a carmine red colour. Pollination is carried out by local insects. In cultivation, fruits very rarely form. They are elongated in shape, dark red in colour, approximately 2 cm long, and contain small brown seeds.

In a rocky setting or on an arid slope, Mammillaria polythele 'Toluca' stands out for its texture. This cactus creates a beautiful balance with succulents like Echeveria ‘Perle von Nürnberg’. In pots, it fits well in a terracotta bowl, surrounded by a Senecio serpens 'Blue Chalk', a trailing succulent plant with stunning blue foliage.

Location

Place your Mammillaria near a south-facing window to ensure it receives 5 hours of direct sunlight. Avoid areas prone to cold draughts or sudden temperature fluctuations. Rotate the pot regularly so all sides of the cactus receive ample light. Given its spines, avoid placing it near walkways or in areas frequented by young children or pets. In winter, a rest period is required, which means reducing watering.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month, or even less if the plant is in a cool room (<15°C).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in early spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot. It doesn't mind being slightly cramped; in fact, it prefers it.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

Occasionally dust the surface of the plant with a soft brush

Disease and pest advice

This plant is quite resilient if its growing requirements are met. In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the substrate is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
