Description

Polaskia chichipe is a columnar cactus with an upright and branching habit, perfect for bright indoor cultivation. It is captivating with its large size and silhouette, its grey-green hue and prominent ribs dotted with spiny areoles. Its structure features a short trunk, which freely branches at the top, forming a dense canopy of incurved branches, giving it a sculptural, tree-like appearance. Hardy and undemanding, it thrives in a well-draining substrate and intense light. Its minimal maintenance and moderate growth make it an ideal choice for lovers of sculptural and modern plants.

Belonging to the Cactaceae family, Polaskia chichipe is a cactus native to the semi-arid regions of central Mexico, particularly the states of Puebla and Oaxaca. Its natural habitat consists of rocky and arid slopes, where it grows in dense colonies. It reaches 4 to 5 metres in the wild, but in cultivation, its height rarely exceeds 1 to 2 metres in pots, still an imposing indoor cactus. This cactus develops a columnar stem, often branched from the base, with thick, glaucous green to greyish-green stems. The stems are divided into 10 to 12 prominent vertical ribs, with spaced areoles bearing 6 to 8 radial thorns, brownish to pale yellow, rigid and sharp. At maturity, some stems partially turn woody at the base, giving the plant a tree-like appearance. The flowering, usually in summer, produces diurnal campanulate flowers that remain open at night, with a greenish-white to cream hue, measuring between 2 and 4 cm in diameter. These flowers have numerous overlapping tepals, with stamens spirally inserted around the floral tube. After pollination in its natural habitat, the plant produces round, bright red berries, measuring 1 to 2 cm, containing small, black and shiny seeds. These fruits are edible and slightly sweet, serving as a traditional food source in Mexico.

Indoors, grow Polaskia chichipe in a terracotta pot with drainage holes, promoting good root aeration and effective drainage. It pairs beautifully with other columnar cacti such as Pachycereus pringlei or Stenocereus thurberi, creating a desert-inspired ambience!

Location

The Polaskia chichipe requires maximum exposure to light, preferably near a south-facing window with ideally 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It can be placed outdoors during the warmer season in dry conditions, even in very hot weather, but it is not frost-hardy—avoid exposing it to temperatures below 5°C. In winter, a dormant period at 10-15°C is recommended to encourage flowering, with very minimal watering. A liquid fertiliser specifically for cacti can be applied in spring and summer. Rotate the pot regularly to ensure all sides of the cactus receive sufficient light. Given its spines, avoid placing it near walkways or in areas frequented by young children or pets.

Maintenance and care

Water moderately, allowing the compost to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month, or even less if the plant is in a cool room (<15°C).

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably at the beginning of spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant becomes too large for its pot. It doesn't mind being slightly cramped; in fact, it prefers it.
Use a succulent compost mix with well-draining elements such as coarse sand or perlite. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Apply a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for succulent plants (low in nitrogen, for example NPK 2-7-7), to be applied once a month during the growth period.

Houseplant care

No pruning is necessary. If a stem breaks, let it dry for 15 days, then take a cutting by planting it in a very well-draining substrate.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, gently clean the affected areas with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol. Also ensure the growing medium is well-draining to avoid excess moisture.
