Description

Polystichum rigens is an adorable hardy Japanese fern with a refined and very visual appearance. This evergreen to semi-evergreen species forms a dense clump of compact and tough fronds, with pointed tips that are bright yellow-green in spring and later darken to a matte green colour. Its compact growth, slow development, ease of cultivation, and highly structured architecture make it a very attractive border plant, and also perfect for shaded containers. It thrives in shade or partial shade, in well-drained, moist, fertile soil without limestone.

Polystichum rigens is a slow-growing terrestrial fern, native to Japan and China. It is a perennial plant of the Dryopteridaceae family, with an ascending rhizome, closely related to the male fern. Polystichum rigens forms a green, furrowed stipe (a kind of false trunk), reaching one-third of the size of each frond, covered with brown scales at the base. This short stipe releases a very dense tuft of foliage, about 40 cm (16 in) tall and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 in) wide. The bipinnate lamina has a triangular and narrow shape, with an acid-green colour turning to medium green. Each frond is composed of 12 to 15 pairs of pinnate pinnae, ending in a pointed spine. Young plants sometimes emit an odour that may be unpleasant, but it is only noticeable at a very short distance and quickly dissipates.

The polystichums make up a very diverse and particularly decorative genus throughout the year in most species and varieties. Fully hardy, Polystichum rigens is a small, highly ornamental plant, ideal for decorating a terrace or balcony. In the garden, it will find its place in a shaded rockery, in the company of saxifrages and bergenias, or form beautiful borders, associated with hart's-tongues, Welsh poppies (Meconopsis cambrica), candelabra primroses (Primula bulleyana), or Japanese primroses (Primula japonica). In a container, it can be accompanied by small fuchsias, horned violets, or variegated hostas.

Planting and care

Polystichum rigens grows in shady or partially shady areas, in a humus-rich to clayey soil that is moist but not waterlogged, and close to neutral or slightly acidic. It particularly appreciates a humid and cool atmosphere and a fertile substrate, composed of humus, clay, and dead leaves. The foliage may be partially damaged during very cold winters, without affecting the health of the plant. The old fronds of these ferns should be cut back in early spring, close to the stump, so that you can fully enjoy the extraordinary spectacle of the new fronds' growth each year.
