I have never succeeded with pampas grass. Could it be due to the soil being too acidic?

Description

IMPORTANT: for the preservation of our natural ecosystems, we have removed this plant from our catalogue as it is considered invasive. It is therefore no longer available for sale.

More commonly known as Pampas Grass, Cortaderia selloana is a tall evergreen grass that produces large silver plumes in late summer.

This tall grass forms a large clump of persistent, tough, and sharp dark green leaves. In late summer, large silver-white feathery spikes are carried on stems over 1.8 m (6 ft) tall.

This tall grass needs no introduction, as it has been omnipresent in our gardens since the 1960s. The only point that can perhaps be emphasised is the improper use that has often been made of it. It is arguably the case that it looks rather ridiculous planted all alone in the middle of a lawn, when it can be so beautiful if used en masse or in a flower bed among shrubs.

Easy to grow, Pampas Grass thrives in sunny locations with rich and well-draining soil. In colder regions, plant it in a sheltered spot with well-draining soil, as it does not tolerate heavy or waterlogged soils in winter.

Warning: This species is invasive in wetlands, and its spread along a large stretch of the Atlantic coast is problematic for biodiversity. After escaping from gardens, it colonises fallow land, sandy areas and wetlands, causing significant ecological disruption. If you live in an affected region, we recommend not planting it. It can be substituted with numerous architectural grasses, such as Miscanthus.

Planting and care

Cortaderia selloana enjoys a good amount of sunlight. Place it in a fairly rich soil that is cool but very well drained. It is easy to grow, but protect it from excessive winter moisture as it does not tolerate stagnant water. Water abundantly after planting. Then water regularly during the first year. In late winter (March to April), remove dead leaves but do not cut back all the foliage. Take care when handling its sharp leaves.
