Description

Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' is a very floriferous grass, with long bright red spikes. Also known as Chinese reed or eulalia, Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' is a tall, robust perennial grass forming a large column measuring 1.7m (6ft) in height.

Its deciduous foliage measures 1cm (0.4in) wide, which is initially upright in spring before cascading like a fountain in late summer. This early flowering variety produces long spikes of bright red plumes from the end of July, which turn silvery-white in early autumn.

Its roots form clumps, meaning it does not spread and is therefore not invasive. With deciduous foliage, the leaves and floral spikes remain on the plant throughout winter and regenerate in early spring, when the plant should be cut back to 20cm (8in) above ground level.

Easy to grow, 'Malepartus' thrives in sunny locations and requires moist, well-draining and rich soil.

This grass is very architectural and can be used in wild borders, to create garden partitions, or to provide contrast with geometric shapes in a structured garden.

Planting and care

Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' appreciates sunshine. It temporarily withstands drought. Place it in fairly rich, moist but well-drained soil. Easy to grow, protect it from excessive winter moisture as it does not tolerate stagnant water. Water abundantly after planting. Then, water regularly during the first year. Miscanthus is a demanding plant. It requires a regular fertiliser input that is low in nitrogen. In late winter (March to April), cut the plant back to ground level before new leaves appear to keep its habit compact. It produces new leaves as early as April. Use gloves as the leaves are sharp. It is resistant to diseases. Rodents can disturb it.
