Description

Panicum virgatum 'Rehbraun' is an ornamental grass native to the United States, forming a cloud of small red-brown flowers, accompanied by green foliage, turning orange-red in autumn.

 

Adapted to extreme conditions, Panicum 'Rehbraun' tolerates drought and cold. It is versatile and adapts to many situations in the garden. Non-suckering, this stiffly upright grass is highly appreciated in small gardens.

This grass adapts to any well-drained soil. It is ideal in coastal areas as it tolerates sea spray.

Planting and care

Plant in deep, moist, and moderately fertile soil. Fertiliser inputs are unnecessary. When planting, loosen the soil well to promote establishment. Water during dry weather in the first summer. Plant in spring in cold regions. Leave the dried stems during winter, as they provide an appreciable decorative presence and offer a refuge to useful garden fauna. Cut them dried stems back to about 20cm (8in) above the ground at the end of winter, in February or March.
