Description

The Pennisetum orientale is a beautiful grass with pink spikes forming a large clump of narrow leaves measuring 60cm (23.6 in) in height.

From July to September, this hardy plant up to -10°C, produces feathery pink spikelets, measuring 14cm (5.5 in) in length on slightly arching stems. With a bushy habit, the deciduous clump of leaves, measuring 10cm (3.9 in) in length, pointed and linear, arching, dark green, can reach a width of 75cm (29.5 in).

Originally from Asia, Pennisetum orientale prefers a good, well-drained light garden soil in a sunny location. It prefers a rather cool soil, but dry soil is also suitable. It enjoys heat and it is difficult to keep it as a perennial in cooler climates.

The Pennisetum orientale plant is an excellent choice to add to your autumn flower beds. Group 3 to 4 plants together for a beautiful display. For a rustic touch, try planting it in mixed borders alongside Asters or Echinaceas. You can also grow it in a pot on your terrace! Additionally, the plant's spikelets make for stunning dried bouquets.

In harsh winter weather, it's best to protect the base by covering it with a layer of dead leaves.
