Chloris distichophylla

Chloris distichophylla, also known as Eustachys distichophylla, is an unusual and elegant grass, still little known, that loves well-drained soils. It has long evergreen blue-green leaves. From June to October, it produces numerous very striking brown spikes, arranged in a star shape at the ends of stems that sway with the wind. By the end of summer it gradually takes on warm golden hues.

Belonging to the large family of Poaceae (Grasses), Chloris distichophylla is native to South America, specifically Argentina and Chile. It can reach 1 metre (3 feet) in its natural habitat, but will usually be limited to 50-60 cm (20-24in) under European climates, with a width of 30 cm (12in). Its upright habit, which showcases the brown star-shaped spikes, makes it particularly architectural in flower beds. This effect is further enhanced with the golden tones that appear in autumn, making it particularly luminous. Capable of self-seeding, the plant can eventually form extensive populations if the environment suits it.

Comfortable in full sun or partial shade, Chloris distichophylla grows in any well-drained soil, and can tolerate periods of drought. However its hardiness is moderate, and it is best to plant it in a sheltered location if temperatures frequently drop below -10°C (14°F) in your garden. It is advisable to remove dead leaves at the end of winter, before the start of new growth.

Chloris distichophylla can be advantageously combined with other grasses suited to a rock garden, such as Helictotrichon sempervirens or Bouteloua gracilis, varying the heights, or even with equally tall kniphofias.

It will create contrasts with plants with coarser foliage but tolerant of the same conditions, such as Clematis heracleifolia or Phlomis lycia.
