Lygeum spartum is a beautiful evergreen grass with thin and flexible cylindrical foliage of a beautiful emerald-grey. It bears curious silvery flowers in the shape of a bird's beak. It will find its place in a grass garden or a scree garden, in the company of gaura, perovskia, and blue oat.

The species gets its name from "sparterie" (which used to designate the making of objects from plant fibres; remember the Spartans!!!) due to the strength of the fibres in its stems.

Planting and care

In its natural habitat, Lygeum spartum grows in sandy soil. However, it can tolerate almost any type of soil as long as it is not too wet in winter. In our clay soil, it even has the tendency to self-seed. However, it is sensitive to severe cold that damages the foliage and causes it to wither.
