Description

The Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum, known as palmate rhubarb or ornamental rhubarb, is a decorative perennial, cultivated for both its magnificent ample foliage and its large blood-red spikes that reach a height of 2m (7ft).

In addition to their well-known culinary qualities, rhubarbs are also key elements for ornamenting a colorful flowerbed, an exotic garden, or even an ornamental vegetable garden. Originally from China, the palmate rhubarb forms a robust stump with large fleshy roots that easily penetrate heavy and clayey soils. It is an imposing perennial plant in rich soils!

The Rheum palmatum var. tanguticum is highly decorative thanks to its large deciduous palmate leaves with a bright red hue and its large clusters of blood-red spike flowers, reaching almost 2m (7ft) in height.

Very hardy, this ornamental rhubarb appreciates bright exposures, but its foliage is lush and colorful in partial shade. It prefers heavy, deep, clayey, rich, and moist soils. Cultivate it in the back of a flowerbed or against the west wall of a house. Its exotic appearance blends well with polygonums, hostas, perennial geraniums, and carex.
