Description

Sempervivum 'Bronco' is a remarkably coloured variety of houseleek that retains its colour all year round. Its evergreen, medium-sized rosettes are tightly packed and display a beautiful dark bronze-green colour, with a strong purple to violet border on the edges of the leaves and at the centre of the rosettes. The plant produces pink star-shaped flowers in summer, in the heart of mature rosettes. This hardy and succulent perennial complements stones wonderfully, softening their features and covering them with a richly coloured cloak. This prolific houseleek is one of the few varieties awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society. Clinging with all its might to life, even when abandoned on a pile of stones, this unusual plant always manages to conquer the gardener's heart.

Sempervivum 'Bronco' is a superb German hybrid cultivar dating back to 1977. This succulent perennial belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Houseleeks grow spontaneously in rocky grassland, on rocks and scree, in open and sunny areas, mainly in mountainous regions.

The 'Bronco' variety has thick and long roots that penetrate deeply into rock crevices, ensuring a good grip on the walls while drawing water from the depths. The particularly prolific plant slowly forms beautiful colonies of rosettes of different sizes, juxtaposed and reaching 6cm (2in) in diameter at maturity, and not exceeding 10cm (4in) in height. Over time, this houseleek can form a dense carpet through its stoloniferous stems, spreading over 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in) on the ground, perfectly following its contours. Resembling a small spread-out artichoke, each pruinose rosette is composed of numerous pointed leaves without petioles. Their bronze-green colour at the base becomes enriched with purple to violet hues on the edges and even burnt orange in summer, surrounding a purple-violet centre. The flowering occurs sporadically on rosettes aged 2 or 3 years, which will then disappear after ensuring the plants perpetuity by producing numerous small rosettes on the periphery. The 12 to 15cm (5 to 6in) tall flower stalks develop from June to August, formed by thick stems that bear 1 to 5 star-shaped flowers with 8 to 10 pink-purple petals.

'Bronco' Sempervivum, like all houseleeks, is a boon for gardens with thin soil. It thrives where few species survive, colonising abandoned spaces. You can enjoy this hardy perennial if your soil is poor, rather dry, stony, rocky, or even slightly chalky. It withstands temperatures below -15°C (5°F), requires no maintenance, and promises to bring life to any pile of stones, a wall, or even a green roof. Houseleeks are unusual and easy-to-care-for succulent plants that quickly become endearing. Their flowers and foliage with various hues inspire the desire to collect them, propagate them, and create astonishing arrangements in the harshest locations. They are magnificent in terms of their design when potted, especially in low terracotta pots, and are irreplaceable in borders, troughs, or rockeries, alongside wall bellflowers, or Lewisia cotyledon. Consider choosing companions with staggered flowering times (sedums, thymes) and colourful foliage (bergenia, Euphorbia myrsinites) to create a varied and joyful rockery.

Planting and care

Sempervivum 'Bronco' enjoys sunny or partially shaded exposures, and perfectly drained, moist to very dry and poor, sandy or gravelly soils. You can plant it in the ground or in a container in spring or autumn, adding gravel or coarse sand to the planting substrate. Conversely, if you place it on a rockery or a wall, give it just a little potting soil to help it to establish itself. Afterwards, it will manage on its own.

If you want to multiply it, simply cut a few young rosettes and replant them elsewhere, burying the roots just slightly.

Take care of it by ensuring that it is not overwhelmed by taller plants, that it does not become covered in dead leaves or vegetation residue, and by possibly removing small faded inflorescences.
