New flowerbed project coming to the foreground in front of my large collection of giant dahlias. White, blue, yellow base. Healthy yarrows. Let's get to work now, we need to dig!

Description

The Achillea millefolium 'Heinrich Vogeler' or Achillea lanulosa 'Heinrich Vogeler' is a perennial stoloniferous hybrid (having stolons: creeping stems forming a new plant). It is a plant with a bushy habit. Vigorous and very floriferous, the Achillea blooms between June and September. It is a beautiful inflorescence of pure white. The flowers are gathered in large umbels that take the form of a flat corymb. These umbels are held on hairy stems. The flowers give rise to fruits called achenes.

The semi-evergreen grey-green foliage creates a beautiful contrast with the white flowers. It is a light foliage, cut into strips and quite dense. At maturity, the plant reaches a height of 60 cm (24in). The plant thrives in rockeries and is also well suited for border plantings. These flowers also make beautiful fresh or dried bouquets.

The Achillea 'Heinrich Vogeler' is a melliferous plant, meaning it contains substances collected by pollinating insects or some birds that will turn into honey. Additionally, it attracts butterflies. It pairs well with Hemerocallis, Kniphofias, Nepetas, and Scabiosas. It is a creation of Ernst Pagels. The healing power of this yarrow is said to have been discovered by Achilles during the Trojan War to heal a wound following the advice of Venus. The plant is hemostatic (stops bleeding), it has healing leaves and flowers that have a fever-reducing effect.

Planting and care

Place the 'Heinrich Vogeler' yarrow mainly in full sun in a light, neutral to chalky soil, even rocky and well-drained. It has good drought resistance and is very hardy. Easy to grow, it does not require any special maintenance. Simply remove the faded flower stalks to promote a second flowering and water regularly. You can prune from time to time to maintain a compact habit. In summer, make sure the soil does not dry out too much. Powdery mildew is common for Yarrow. Beware of aphid attacks.
