Description

Agapanthus 'Lavender Haze' is a relatively recent variety of Agapanthus that stands out for its size and brightness of its large umbels of unusual lavender blue flowers. Each inflorescence brings together dozens of small bell-shaped flowers with a pearly blue colour and a more intense blue midline. This evergreen variety, moderately hardy, also produces narrow dark green leaves, which are ornamental even when not in bloom. Ideal in large pots on the terrace, or planted in small groups near passageways, this collector's plant should be planted in well-drained soil, in full sun, and should never lack water during its growing period.

Agapanthus belong to the lily family. The very recent hybrid variety 'Lavender Haze' forms a narrow clump of linear and dark green foliage, about 50cm (20in) tall, which remains very ornamental even in winter. The wide spherical umbels, about 25cm (10in) in diameter, rise above, carried by very long stems, about 80cm (32in), which are very sturdy. The flowering takes place between June-July and September depending on the regions. The blue flower buds open into numerous iridescent trumpets, whose unusual pastel shade is a very soft blue-grey mauve. Each petal is marked with a darker, medium blue central line. The almost white stamens are tipped with dark anthers, giving the whole something very bright that catches the eye.

This evergreen variety is only moderately hardy (up to about -8°C (17.6°F)). Plant it either in a pot to overwinter and place it on a sunny terrace in summer, or in the ground, in a warm location and in a cool and well-drained soil. It is a plant that thrives by the sea, in an English cottage, and even in a city garden, used as a focal point on a terrace, in an exotic or contemporary style. It pairs well with perennials. Cut and placed in a vase, the flowers will bring freshness and a lot of originality to the house.

Planting and care

The 'Lavender Haze' Agapanthus is grown in full sun in a warm location, in a protected area facing south, in our regions spared from severe frosts. Place it in a rich and moist but well-drained soil to improve its hardiness. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week) but not in winter. Mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves about 20cm (8in) thick, covered with a mesh to prevent wind damage. Snow also provides excellent protection against excess moisture and cold. In a pot, bring the plant indoors away from severe frosts, in an unheated room. When planting, place them 10cm (4in) deep in a mixture of leaf soil and compost. Once established in the ground, avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove the faded leaves in autumn. Cut back the spent flower stems so that the plant does not exhaust itself producing seeds.
