Description

Agapanthus 'Twister' is a variety of Agapanthus with an astonishing bicoloured flowering that will turn many heads. This compact variety produces huge compound umbels of small white flowers with blue bases, a rare and dynamic colour under the summer sun. Although not very tall, the plant is robust and relatively hardy. It will work wonders in a large pot on the terrace, giving a holiday and seaside atmosphere to even the most modest decor. Cultivate in full sun, in rich, well-drained, moist to dry soil.

This new hybrid Agapanthus is a bulbous plant in the lily family, its foliage disappears in autumn.

The 'Twister' variety is an exceptional form, noticeable from a distance when in full bloom. The plant develops from a short rhizome with fleshy roots. It forms a languid clump, composed of narrow, dark green-grey ribbon-like leaves, deciduous to semi-evergreen depending on the climate. In flower, it will not exceed 60cm (24in) in height and 50cm (20in) in width. In the heart of summer, its sturdy, dark green-grey flower stems appear, crowned with large 15cm (6in) umbels, consisting of 20 to 50 white flowers with an ultramarine blue base. This bulbous plant is hardy up to approximately -12°C, in ideal conditions, meaning in well-drained soil and sheltered from wind and inclement weather.

The 'Twister' Agapanthus is used in the background of flower beds, surrounded by low-growing perennials with grey foliage, for example, or to border pathways, with the ground covered by creeping plants (Cerastiums, Artemisias, creeping Euonymus, aubrietas). It will also be invited into large pots on the terrace, in a pretty wide pot that will allow this plant to produce many flower stalks. This cultivation method has the advantage of being able to store it indoors during intense frost. It is a plant that thrives by the seaside, in an English cottage, and even in a contemporary-style city garden. Cut and placed in a vase, the flowers and leaves will bring their freshness and undeniable originality to the house.

Planting and care

'Twister' Agapanthus is grown in full sun in a hot location, in a protected and south-facing area. Place it in a rich and moist but well-drained soil to optimize its hardiness. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week) but not in winter. Mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves, 20cm (8in) thick, covered with a wire mesh to prevent wind damage. Snow also provides excellent protection against excessive moisture and cold. In a pot, bring the plant indoors to protect it from severe frost, in an unheated room. When planting, place them 10cm (4in) deep in a mixture of leaf compost and compost. Once established in the ground, avoid disturbing Agapanthus. Remove faded leaves in autumn. Cut back the spent flower stalks to prevent the plant from exhausting itself by producing seeds.
