Aster amethystinus Kylie

Aster amethystinus 'Kylie' is a bushy perennial that reaches a height of 1m (3ft), forming a cloud of small lilac-pink flowers with raspberry centres in September. It is a variety that is particularly resistant to powdery mildew.

Originally from North America, this perennial, nicknamed "Eye of Christ," forms a bushy, hardy, and robust clump. A cross between Aster ericoïdes and A. novae-angliae, it has small linear leaves, which are lanceolate, 7cm (3in) long, and medium green. In September, it produces an abundance of small flowers in clusters 10cm (4in) long. The flowers are lilac-pink with raspberry centres. They grow on highly branched stems. The flowers look pretty in a floral arrangement.

Easy to grow, Aster amethystinus 'Kylie' appreciates a consistent, calcareous, well-drained, not too poor soil that remains moist in summer. It prefers a sunny or lightly shaded location. Prune back after flowering and divide if necessary in late autumn or early spring.

Aster amethystinus 'Kylie' is used in flower beds, as a fence covering, or for making bouquets, often paired with anemones and helenium.

Tips: Avoid placing them in the shade as the flowering will be less abundant.
