Beautiful blooming! I had ordered these dwarf asters, but they easily reached a height of 60cm.

Description

Aster dumosus 'Jenny' is a floriferous perennial with a compact habit. This Dwarf Aster bears multiple small flowers from late August until October, bringing life to the front of flower beds, thanks to its vibrant colours. Its deep pink, leaning towards red, is indeed a delight under the autumn sun. Easy and hardy, it can also be grown in pots to allow you to keep it near entrances and on patios.

Asters come in many varieties: some bloom in spring, others in summer or autumn. They can be giants (over 1m (3ft)) or small (20 to 40cm (8 to 16in)), and come in white, pink, red, or blue. They prefer moist soil but tolerate dry conditions. The possibilities are numerous and hybridisation work has contributed to this selection. However, they all share their numerous daisy-like flowers, which often attract pollinators and generously colour flower beds.

'Jenny' is no exception. Its small flowers (about 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in)) are a very dense pink colour that leans towards red. They are made up of several rows of "petals", which are actually ligulate flowers, and a yellow centre, formed by tubular flowers. They are numerous and actively contribute to the beautification of flower beds. This cultivar forms a compact clump, thanks to its upright stems and lanceolate leaves. It does not exceed 40cm (16in) in height and 30cm (12in) in width. It is therefore often intended to be placed at the front of flower beds. However, it also thrives in pots and allows you to add colour to balconies, courtyards, and the surroundings of your house. In this case, make sure to keep the substrate moist and provide some fertiliser. 'Jenny' appreciates fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It will shine in the sun and tolerate partial shade. Hardy, it can withstand temperatures down to-15°C (5°F).

Aster dumosus 'Jenny' will create a beautiful autumn ensemble alongside grasses such as Stipa pennata or tenuifolia, Asters like 'Red September' or Aster turbinellus, 'Blackfield' Knotweed, and Sedums. Depending on its neighbours, you can emphasise its tidy or wild appearance and highlight its deep hues.

Planting and care

Aster dumosus 'Jenny' can be planted in spring or autumn, either in the ground or in a pot. It prefers moist, rich, and well-drained soil, and sunny or semi-shaded exposures. At the end of flowering (early winter), you can cut back the flower stalks to allow the stump to strengthen. This is a perennial that is susceptible to powdery mildew, so be careful not to water its foliage. It can be divided after 3-4 years. This way, you can plant it in multiple locations and allow it to regain its vigour.
