Thanks to the individuals (Julie for the order preparation and ? from the shipping department), the young plant received is in a state of dormancy. Planted close to yellow and orange roses, I am now patiently waiting for it to start growing again... (or not?).

Description

Aster dumosus 'Samoa' is a robust perennial that forms a cushion of violet flowers resembling small daisies. It flowers every year between August and October. Its running stump emits ramified stems, adorned with lanceolate, dark green and glossy leaves.

This 40cm (16in) tall aster brings the garden to life in late summer and early autumn. It thrives in a sunny or slightly shaded position in rich and moist soil. It is easy to grow and its compact habit makes it ideal for border plantings, but also for pots and containers, thus brightening up the surroundings of your house, even in front of your windows.

'Samoa' is perfect for creating charming autumn scenes when combined with golden or coppery grasses, tall sedums, and green-leaved heucheras, as well as its orange chrysanthemum cousins. It can also be planted in borders or rockeries.

Asters belong to the Asteraceae family, which mostly consists of herbaceous plants. It is a genus that offers a large number of species, represented by a multitude of floriferous varieties. They come in all sizes, with an extremely rich range of colours. Each season, there are several species to choose from, including Aster alpinus or A. tongolensis for spring asters, A. amellus or A. frikartii for summer asters, and A. cordifolius, A. dumosus, A. ericoides, A. lateriflorus, A. novae-angliae, or A. novi-belgii for autumn asters.

Planting and care

Plant Aster dumosus 'Samoa' in autumn or spring in a flower bed or border, in rich soil that is not too dry or damp. It appreciates a sunny exposure but tolerates partial shade. In a flower bed, leave at least a 30cm (12in) spacing between the plants. Mulch the soil from the end of spring, and water in case of drought, being careful not to wet the foliage to limit the appearance of powdery mildew to which asters are susceptible. At the end of flowering, cut back the clump to 10cm (4in). Divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years to maintain vigorous stumps, more resistant to powdery mildew.
