Description

Aster lateriflorus 'Chloe' is a charming autumn perennial, notable for its clusters of numerous white flowers with a purple centre. It will be an asset in flowerbed compositions, generously accompanying the colours of autumn.

Aster lateriflorus 'Chloe' reaches 1m (3ft) in height with a spread of 0.80m (3ft). Its elongated leaves, with smooth margins, end in a point, in foliage of a beautiful green. The green stems also have purple nuances. From September to October this aster literally transforms into a constellation of small white flowers resembling small daisies with a slightly purple centre.

Very resistant to diseases and frost (-20), this aster can tolerate any type of soil as long as it does not experience stagnant moisture in winter. It appreciates a sunny exposure but tolerates partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit.

It's impossible to imagine our gardens without aster beds or borders. Undemanding, they blend very well with all other flowerbed plants -think of geraniums, which accompany the autumn flowering of asters wonderfully.

Asters belong to the family of Asteraceae, or Compositae, which mostly consists of herbaceous plants. The genus Aster offers a large number of species, represented by a multitude of floriferous varieties. They come in all sizes, in an extremely rich range of colours. There are several species associated with each season, including spring asters such as Aster alpinus or Aster tongolensis; summer asters, such as Aster amellus or Aster frikartii; and autumn asters, such as Aster cordifolius, Aster dumosus, Aster ericoides, Aster lateriflorus, Aster novae-angliae, or Aster novi-belgii.

Planting and care

Plant Aster lateriforus 'Chloe' in autumn or spring in a regular, rich, and well-worked soil. To keep the soil moist around its base, mulch your bed from June onwards and water during heatwaves. It prefers a sunny site but can tolerate partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit. Avoid strong winds that could flatten the clumps. Avoid moving once established as it doesn't like change. In a bed, leave at least 50 cm (20in) between plants. Aster lateriflorus are resistant to disease. Divide the clumps every three years to ensure abundant flowering. Do not replant the divisions in the same spot, and give them a rich soil.
