Description

'Aster lateriflorus 'Prince' is a very floriferous perennial with young bronze-purple leaves. It flowers in September and October, bearing numerous small white flowers with raspberry-coloured centres on spreading branches, making it an essential plant for autumn gardens.

Originally from North America, the Aster 'Prince' forms a bushy clump 60cm (24in) tall, much stockier than the variety 'Lady in Black' from which it originates. It has alternate, simple, lanceolate leaves, 15cm (6in) long, brown-purple then medium green at maturity. The flowers, grouped in 15cm (6in) long corymbs, are white with raspberry centres and grow on generally branched stems, very beautiful in a cut flower arrangement.

Easy to grow, Aster lateriflorus 'Prince' appreciates a consistent, alkaline or acidic, well-drained, not too poor soil that stays moist in summer, in full sun or light shade. Prune back faded stems and divide the clump in late winter if necessary.

Aster lateriflorus 'Prince' is used in flowerbeds, to cover fences, or as cut flowers in bouquets, combined with Japanese anemones, Heleniums, and grasses.

Tip: Avoid placing in the shade as flowering will be less abundant and the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew.

Planting and care

The 'Prince' lateriflorus Aster is planted in spring or autumn in good garden soil, leaving a surrounding space of 30-40cm (12-16in). Stake, and provide flower fertiliser in spring. To limit height, you can pinch out in April/May. Water well in summer. Cut back to ground level after heavy frost. Divide in spring every 4/6 years to prevent it from thinning out. Beware of snails and slugs as well as fungal diseases.
