Description

Aster macrophyllus 'Twilight' is a perennial with a bushy habit that can be found in all gardens, even wild ones, whether in borders, rockeries, by ponds, or on its own.

It leads the way as one of the first autumn flowering asters, blooming from August to October. The flowers, grouped in corymbs, resemble daisies. They have a bluish-violet colour with a yellow centre and measure 3 cm (1in) in diameter. They make lovely cut flowers that create beautiful bouquets.

The flowers are held on upright stems. Known as Large-leaved Aster, it has deciduous light green foliage carried on reddish stems. The leaves are thick and lanceolate in shape.

Aster macrophyllus can reach a height of 80 cm (32in). Native to boreal America, it is very hardy. It can be combined with Rudbeckias as well as Autumn Sedums for beautiful borders. The Native Americans used to smoke the dried leaves and make tea out of them.

Planting and care

Aster macrophyllus mainly appreciates light shade but can tolerate full sun. Grow in any moist soil. When planting, cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Easy to grow, simply prune them back every year after flowering in November. You can divide in late autumn or spring if they become too large. Stake your Aster macrophyllus in March. Avoid stagnant moisture which can be fatal. Asters are more or less susceptible to mildew - treat preventively with Bordeaux mixture.
