Description

Astrantia bavarica, commonly known as Bavarian Masterwort, is a botanical species native to Europe, distinguished by its relatively tall growth and white and lime green flowers, tinged with pale pink at the tips of the central flowers. It brings a natural charm to gardens with its delicate small umbels that bloom effortlessly throughout the summer. It is characterised by its easy-going nature and the inherent robustness of wild plants. It blends perfectly with the pastel blooms of perennial borders and excels in both fresh and dried bouquets.

Astrantia bavarica belongs to the Apiaceae family. It is native to Europe and can be found in Germany, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, and the Eastern Alps. It is common in mountain forests, scrub vegetation, clearings, and near streams, usually on limestone soils, at an altitude of 2,300 metres. The bushy and somewhat loose habit enhances the elegance of the flowering. The plant forms a clump reaching 60 to 90 cm in flower height, 45 cm for the foliage, and 45 cm wide. The foliage is dense, composed of deciduous palmate leaves with 5 deep lobes, lanceolate, toothed, green and strongly veined. The umbel inflorescences appear from June to August, sometimes even in September, at the end of very stiff stems. They consist of dozens of small white and lime green flowers surrounded by an involucre of large white bracts with green tips.

Easy to grow Astrantia bavarica thrives in humus-bearing, moist, well-drained soil in sunny, semi-shady, or even shady positions in warm climates. This ancient plant, valued in modern gardens, requires little maintenance and flourishes even in neglected areas. It is ideal for "meadow" style mass plantings, with its flowers providing a beautiful texture alongside ornamental grasses. It also helps create large wildflower swathes along herbaceous borders, while being perfect for composing lovely floral decorations, fresh or dried. It harmonises well with perennials and roses, in natural or romantic settings. In shaded areas, pair it with Hostas and Brunneras, for example.

Tip: Combine multiple varieties to create a beautiful array of colours.

Planting and care

Plant Astrantia bavarica in humus-bearing, moist, and well-drained soil in a sunny, semi-shaded, or even shady location in a warm climate. It requires little maintenance. Trim back unsightly foliage before winter and remove faded flowers to encourage a second flowering. It self-seeds very easily. Its only known enemies are slugs and snails.

Plant in spring or autumn, at a rate of 5 plants per square metre. To plant, work the soil to a depth of 20 cm, crumbling well, and at the bottom of the planting hole, add a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn. Position your plant, freed from its pot, covering the top of the plant's root ball with 3 cm of soil, fill in and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. In damp weather, keep slugs away using wood ash, anti-slug pellets, or beer traps.
