Description

Bergenia 'Bressingham White' is a floriferous perennial with large spring flowers of pure white, contrasting with its dark green and glossy leaves. A remarkable variety with its foliage, it will be ideal in rockeries or as ground cover.

Bergenia 'Bressingham White' is a beautiful perennial with a dense, spreading habit, reaching a height of 30cm (12in) and a spread of 50cm (20in). Its semi-evergreen, glossy leaves are dark green with a light green central vein. They are ovate in shape, elongated, with a widened and rounded tip. During the months of May to June, numerous light brown stems will reveal large open bell-shaped flowers of pure white with a purple centre and pastel green-pink sepals. This array of colours will bring a refined touch to your garden.

Easy to grow and not very demanding, it has good hardiness (-15°C (5°F)). With a slow growth rate, it prefers rich, humus-rich, well-drained soils, but can also tolerate ordinary soil without complaint. It will be ideal in rockeries or as ground cover in a sunny exposition, even in partial shade or shade. It will pair well with Asters, Stipas, or Phlox.

Planting and care

Plant Bergenia 'Bressingham White' in ordinary soil, but a rich and moist soil is preferable. Dry soils tend to limit growth. It will thrive in shade, partial shade, or sunny but not scorching positions: dense shade should be avoided as it does not flower, as well as strong sun exposure. Cold weather and poor soils enhance its colours. Just make sure to water them regularly during the first six weeks to promote establishment. Clumps can be planted in spring or autumn, with a spacing of 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) between plants. To propagate, rhizomes can be divided at the end of winter. Although a good fertilizer benefits the growth of this plant, care must be taken not to overly enrich the soil with nitrogen to facilitate flowering. Remove any faded leaves in spring. Watch out for the appearance of slugs and snails in spring.
