Description

Bergenia 'Angel Kiss' (Dragonfly Series) is a floriferous perennial with pale pink spring flowers, elegant and compact. It has very attractive evergreen foliage, leathery, dark green with reddish tones in winter, ideal for rockeries and borders.

Native to Eastern and Central Asia, Bergenias are rhizomatous perennials. The Bergenia 'Angel Kiss' has a spreading and compact creeping habit, reaching 30cm (12in) in height and 40cm (16in) in width. Its small rosette leaves are glossy, semi-evergreen, dark green with a light green central vein. They are ovate in shape, slender, with rounded tips and incurved margins. During winter, its leaves turn reddish-violet adding colour. This floriferous variety is adorned with panicles of semi-double pale pink flowers from April to May. An event not to be missed!

Easy to grow and not demanding, 'Angel Kiss' is highly hardy and has a slow growth rate. If you are looking for a sturdy perennial that will always be attractive, look no further than this Bergenia. It thrives in rockeries as ground cover, and also at the base of deciduous bushes that let in the winter sun but protect it from the summer heat. It can be associated with perennial geraniums, primroses, and hostas to cover a slope.

Planting and care

Plant Bergenia 'Angel Kiss' in ordinary soil, but rich and moist soil is preferable. Too dry soils tend to limit growth. It thrives in shade, partial shade, or sunny but not scorching locations: dense shade, where it does not flower, and strong sunlight should be avoided. Cold and poor soils enhance its colours. Just make sure to water them regularly for the first six weeks to promote establishment. Clumps can be planted in spring or autumn, spacing the plants 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) apart. To propagate, rhizomes can be divided at the end of winter. Although a good fertilizer benefits the growth of this plant, care should be taken not to overly enrich the soil with nitrogen to facilitate flowering. Remove all faded leaves in spring. Watch out for the appearance of slugs and snails in spring.
