Description

Campanula  ADANSA Purple, also known as the Wall Bellflower, is a vigorous species with a creeping habit, ideal for beautifying rockeries and walls, in full sun or light shade. It forms a prostrate clump from which long stems emerge in spring and early summer, bearing numerous small lavender-blue star-shaped flowers with white centres. It is a charming, floriferous ground cover that also looks wonderful in a pot. This variety has a rather wild character with long tendrils that readily escape from the main clump.

Campanula ADANSA Purple belongs to the Campanulaceae family, it is a cultivar derived from Campanula porscharskyana, native to the mountains of the Balkans (Croatia). In the wild, this species is found in rock crevices and high mountain scree. This perennial forms a cushion measuring 25 cm (10in) high, with a minimum spread of 40 cm (16in). It spreads through stems that root on contact with the ground, allowing it to occupy a large area. Flowering begins in late spring and continues throughout summer, more pronounced in cool climates. The flowers have delicate petals, measure 2 to 2.5 cm (1in) in diameter and are carried in loose panicles along the hairy stems. The foliage is semi-evergreen to evergreen depending on the climate, light green and vibrant, composed of small hairy, long-stalked, heart-shaped leaves.

Campanula Adansa Purple is primarily a rockery plant. It quickly fills the crevices in paving and walls. It also suits a wild garden perfectly and can be admired in pots, in a light and well-drained substrate or in hanging baskets where it cascades down in small bright curtains.

Planting and care

This campanula likes cool, light, moist soils, but not stagnant humidity that causes the roots to rot. It requires well-drained soil, even limestone, but still slightly moist to thrive. You can plant it in non-scorching sun or partial shade, sheltered from strong winds that dry it out. This mountain plant does not like either too hot climates or nights where the temperature remains high. Its creeping stems can be easily controlled by cutting back. Clean the foliage after flowering.
