Collection items (3 plants)

Description

This collection brings together 3 varieties of so-called Clustered Bellflowers, or Campanula glomerata, in various colours - pink, bluish-purple, and pure white. These are perennial rhizomatous plants with a shrubby habit, forming a clump that widens over time. Their characteristic flowering takes the form of almost spherical bouquets composed of numerous bell-shaped flowers at the end of 50 cm (20in) tall stiff stems. It blooms continuously from late spring until the very beginning of autumn if you take care to regularly remove faded flowers.

The collection consists of 3 plants:

- x 1 Campanula glomerata 'Caroline': a variety with single, pale pink flowers, becoming deep pink at the tips of petals.

- x 1 Campanula glomerata 'Superba': a variety with single, deep purple flowers.

- x 1 Campanula glomerata 'Alba': a form with pure white flowers, with slightly earlier flowering, sometimes blooming as early as May.

Clustered campanulas are interesting for their long flowering period and their easy growing requirements. Place them in a slightly moist corner of the garden, and they will spread over the years. The plants in this collection will thrive in perennial borders and in large, not too dry rockeries, in partial shade. The delicate hues of their flowers will be better retained in a part shaded exposure. They tolerate limestone well, and any well-prepared and well-drained garden soil will be suitable. Clustered Bellflowers can eventually spread over about 1 m²: take this into account when planting! If the plant disappears due to summer drought, it will reappear with the first rains. Try these pairings: with foxgloves and penstemons, close to shrub roses. In a small rustic corner, combine your campanulas with daisies and oriental poppies, for example.

Planting and care

Plant in early spring or early autumn in a sunny or partially shaded position. Place it in a fertile, well-drained, rather light soil that does not dry out too much. Clustered bellflower can tolerate limestone. Prune the stems after flowering to promote a second flowering and to prevent self-seeding. You can stake the plant if necessary in windy areas. Watering should be moderate. Watch out for slugs and snails in the garden.
