Description

This Duo brings together two forms of the peach-leaved bellflower, the wild species with lavender-blue bells and its pure white form. A wild plant of great simplicity, emblematic of low-maintenance gardens, Campanula persicifolia in winter reveals only a modest rosette of leaves, but it flourishes for several weeks in summer, at a height of 70-80 cm (28-32in). It is a truly accommodating perennial, both low-maintenance in terms of water and very hardy, comfortable in all our regions. It grows in ordinary soil, in full sun or partial shade, and often self-seeds spontaneously. Perfect in romantic or country-style compositions, it is also a very pretty cut flower.

The collection consists of 2 plants:

- x 1 Campanula persicifolia: lavender-blue flowering

- x 1 Campanula persicifolia 'Alba': pure white flowering

The peach-leaved bellflower is always welcome in a garden, punctuating borders here and there with pretty flower clusters. Hardy below -15°C (5°F),  Campanula persicifolia thrives in sunny or partial shade positions: the further south you go, the more it will need a shaded spot in the afternoon. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in ordinary garden soil, deep enough and not too dry in summer. An excellent bedding plant, this unpretentious flower is also suitable for large borders. It accompanies roses and peonies, lightening their heavy corollas, and gets along well with columbines, foxgloves, and annual poppies, with the rose campion, the dame's rocket... there is no shortage of ideas for associations, in country scenes, in 'English' or romantic gardens. To use it as groundcover, plant 6 plants per m². To interplant it between small shrubs or sturdy perennials, plant it in groups of 3, 50-60 cm (20-24in) apart. Like catmints, the peach-leaved bellflower is an excellent companion for bedding roses or groundcover roses. It is also a plant that produces fantastic flowers for bouquets, to be combined with lilacs, garden irises, roses, and peonies, for example.

Planting and care

Hardy down to -15°C (5°F), Campanula persicifolia thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions. The further south you go, the more it will need a shaded spot in the afternoon. Plant it from March to May and from September to November in an ordinary, but deep, slightly acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline, loose and rather moist soil. Regularly remove faded flowers in summer and prune it after flowering to cut back the faded flower stalks to encourage the plant to produce new foliage. Don't be fooled by the size of the young plant in the bucket: give it the space you would give to a small bush. You can divide clumps in autumn and spring. For container planting, apply organic fertilizer at least once a year.
