Delphinium Blue Jay - Larkspur

Delphinium 'Blue Jay' is a tall perennial variety, with magnificent inflorescences covered with very pure celestial blue flowers, with a dark black collar at the heart. Majestic and spectacular as a background in flower beds, in planters, in pots near the house, or in bouquets, these delphiniums thrive in the sun in rich, deep, permeable soils and will require staking.

Delphinium 'Blue Jay' is one of the many hybrids obtained from D. elatum. It is a large herbaceous perennial plant with a short lifespan but rapid growth. It forms a clump of finely dissected palmate, tender green leaves from which flower spikes reaching 1 m (3ft) in height on numerous stems ranging from 1.5 to 1.80 m (5 to 6ft) tall emerge in summer. The main flowering is in June, repeating in September if the stems are cut back as they fade, loved by pollinating insects. The flowers are single, cup-shaped, arranged on tall, sturdy spikes with medium, pure, and deep sky-blue petals, surrounding a large black collar, called a "bee". The plant develops from a woody rootstock that sinks into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds volume, height, and style to perennial flower beds. They make great companions for moss or gallica roses, creating charming and romantic displays. You can also create a beautiful combination with soft orange daylilies and gypsophila 'Rosenschleier'. This variety is well suited for flowering pots. It should be carefully staked, or supported by tall perennials or flowering bushes. Its flowers hold up well and are particularly appreciated in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching and optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transport.
