Description

Delphinium x cultorum Pacific 'Black Knight', also known as larkspur, is a tall and magnificent perennial plant that produces stunning flower heads in the summer. The flowers, which are deep bluish-violet in colour, are often over 1 metre (3 feet) tall and have a dark black collar at the centre. They are perfect for adding a touch of grandeur to the back of a border, in pots or planters near your house or in bouquets. These larkspurs thrive in sunny locations that have rich, deep and permeable soil.

The 'Pacific Black Knight' Delphinium is a hybrid (x cultorum) obtained by cross-breeding D. elatum, which also gave rise to the famous "Pacific Giant" series. This large herbaceous perennial plant has a short life span but rapid growth. It forms a cluster of deeply cut palmate foliage, tender green in colour, from which floral spikes emerge in summer. The spikes can reach a height of 1 to 1.20 metres (3 to 4 feet) on numerous stems that are 1.8 to 2 metres (6 to 7 feet) tall. The main flowering occurs in June and continues in September if the stems are cut back as they fade. It is highly attractive to pollinating insects. The flowers are single, cup-shaped and arranged on large, upright and sturdy spikes. They have deep bluish-violet petals that surround a black collar, called a 'fly' or 'bee'. The plant grows from a woody rootstock that sinks vertically into the soil.

Delphiniums have a characteristic silhouette that adds dimension, verticality and charm to perennial plant beds. They also make great companions for moss or gallica roses, creating charming and romantic compositions. Another beautiful combination can be created with soft orange daylilies and the baby's breath 'Rosenschleier'. This variety is also perfect for creating flower pots and its flowers hold up well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to allow better branching from the base and achieve optimal rooting. This pruning also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

To grow healthy delphiniums, plant them in spring after the last frost in a sunny location with soil that is deep, moist, and well-drained. Make sure the soil is not too rich in limestone. Young plants should have at least two or three shoots, while the well-established ones should have five to seven. During the growth period, water the plants once or twice a week and use liquid fertiliser every two or three weeks. To encourage new growth, remove the faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small side flower shoots. In the fall, cut the entire plant back to ground level.

If you want to add height to your garden, choose these giant plants. They will give structure and balance to the volumes. The taller ones can be planted alone to provide volume and lightness against a dark backdrop of hedges or conifers. The ones of intermediate size will dress up tall flowerbeds, such as those with giant dahlias. Water the plants regularly to keep them healthy, and watch out for slugs.
