Description

Dianthus deltoides 'Rosea' forms a small, evergreen and spreading cushion with fresh pink flowers with fringed petals, showing a dark pink eye. This fast-growing perennial combines strength, an undemanding nature, and abundant flowering. Ideal for rockeries and walls, in full sun. Resistant to drought.

'Rosea' belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is a cultivar derived from Dianthus deltoides, native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in dry areas, heathlands or hills. The growth of this carnation is rapid. Its adult size will not exceed 15cm (6in) in height with a spread of 30cm (12in) or more. This carnation forms a small prostrate clump with a spreading habit. Its linear, medium green leaves are sometimes tinged with violet. They are persistent and flexible, tightly arranged on slender stems. Flowering begins in May and June, continuing until August if the soil is not too dry. The plant is then covered continuously with small, fresh pink flowers with fringed petals at the top of generally uniflorous stems. The flowers are pleasantly scented.

Plant 'Rosea' in an open location where it can spread in the sun. It will be magnificent in a rockery, on a well-drained embankment, or at the top of a dry -stone wall. This plant can also fill the base of bushes in large pots, and decorate large containers or alpine troughs. Its companions can be alpine and mountain plants such as alyssum, soapworts, aubrietas, and sun roses.

Planting and care

Plant in ordinary, stony, limestone, moist to dry and above all well-drained soil. Soil rich in gravel produces good results. Collar rot in soil retaining moisture is the main disease that decimates carnations. This plant prefers a very sunny exposure. Only water in case of prolonged drought. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage flowering and extend its lifespan. In stony soil, this carnation self-seeds abundantly if care is taken to let some fruits ripen. Lightly trim the clump after flowering to help it regenerate. Apply a balanced fertiliser to poor soil in March. This carnation does not appreciate the competition of invasive plants, which, when placed nearby, can kill it by imposing too much shade.
