Healthy and vigorous young plants in bud for some. But the cold weather is coming and we will have to wait until summer to make beautiful bouquets with them.

Description

Echinacea purpurea little magnus is a dwarf variety of Echinacea. This popular perennial has a compact and upright habit with smooth and vigorous stems that are green, tinged with red. It has a fast growth rate and blooms from July to September. Its compact habit showcases large deep pink solitary flowers that measure 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in diameter. Its conical brown-purple cone measures 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3in) long. The colouring of the Little Magnus is more intense and darker than the typical variety.

This rudbeckia attracts birds and butterflies and has deciduous green foliage. The leaves on the stem are ovate to lanceolate, while the basal leaves, measuring 4 to 15 cm (2 to 6in) long, are ovate and dentate, covered in rough hairs. Native to the United States (from Michigan to Virginia), this echinacea is not tall, it does not exceed 60 cm (24in) in height. It is a very hardy perennial.

Echinacea purpurea is a nectar-rich plant, it contains substances collected by pollinating insects that will transform into honey. It is also a medicinal plant used in homoeopathy. It is suited for perennial borders as well as mixed plantings. This ornamental rudbeckia is suitable for container cultivation and makes an excellent long-lasting cut flower for dried or fresh bouquets.

Planting and care

Echinacea purpurea Little Magnus likes a sunny or slightly shaded exposure. Plant it in deep, humus-rich, fairly poor and well-drained soil, though it will accept any type of soil. It is a hardy plant that withstands drought, heat and humidity. It even adapts when it is close to the coast or on a slope. Echinacea is greedy, so regularly add a good fertilizer. Cut back the stems when the flowers have withered to promote the next flowering.
