Description

Epimedium ‘Pink Elf' is a hybrid between Epimedium leptorrhizum and Epimedium pubescens. This perennial produces small star-shaped flowers, delicate and tinted with pink with a dark pink centre from April to May. These graceful flowers bloom well above the foliage.

Its semi-evergreen foliage is dark green. The genus Epimedium, native to the undergrowth of mountains in China, Korea, and Japan, has a bushy habit. This plant, with spring interest, has excellent hardiness, up to -20°C (-4°F). At maturity, Epimedium ‘Pink Elf' reaches a height of 30 cm (12in).

This Epimedium is an excellent low-growing groundcover, with a spreading habit, to be planted under trees in damp shade. It is also used in borders and rockeries. This perennial is decorative with its evergreen foliage that changes in spring and autumn.

Planting and care

Place epimediums in shade or partial shade in fertile and moist, well-drained soil, rich in humus. Good garden soil is perfectly suitable. Keep them protected from cold, drying winds. Although it is a hardy plant, be careful of the early frost that can damage the young flowers and foliage. It is an easy-going plant that withstands drought once established. Remove old leaves during the months of February to March before the formation of spikes. Apply a thick mulch in regions with harsh winters. Carry out regular watering, especially during the first six weeks, to promote establishment.
