The young plant received is very small, but it has a beautiful root volume; it should establish itself without any problem.

Epimedium rubrum 'Galadriel' is an excellent groundcover.  It is hardy and accepts all exposures but prefers light and dry shade. In spring it offers a multitude of delicate clusters of flowers, larger and with a deeper purple-red than in E. rubrum, but devoid of the central yellow hue present in E. rubrum.  Its heart-shaped, evergreen foliage is remarkable for the richness of its colours throughout the seasons, which will brighten up the dark areas of the garden.

Description

Epimedium rubrum 'Galadriel' is a perennial plant particularly sought after for its ability to elegantly establish itself in a shady and dry corner of the garden. The delicacy of its flowers, which appear above the foliage in April-May, has something magical about it. Its name is not a coincidence: inspired by the imagination of the great J.R.R. Tolkien, Galadriel was an elf with radiant beauty, taller than her peers, celebrated for the strength of her body and mind. True to her image, the cherry red flowers of this cultivar are larger than those of the typical species. Vigorous and easy to grow, once established, it will thrive in your garden with very little maintenance required. Its foliage will enchant you throughout the seasons, transitioning from a beautiful marbled red to lemon green in spring, to a deep green in summer, and finally adorning itself with warm reddish-brown tones in autumn.

Epimediums, belonging to the botanical family Berberidaceae, are slow-growing plants with a spreading habit. They are found in nature from Europe to Asia, with the majority originating from China where they typically grow in the understory of woodlands. Epimediums spread through their rhizomes to form excellent groundcover, boasting dense foliage that effectively suffocates weeds. They create true carpets of leaves, which are highly opaque. They bloom in spring, and although the flowering period is not long-lasting, it is truly fascinating. The flowers, gathered in loosely clustered spikes, are borne above the leaves on long, slender floral stems. They appear to float.

Epimedium rubrum 'Galadriel' thrives in woodland environments. It can be planted at the base of trees or shrubs, preferably in shade or partial shade in warmer regions. As for soil type, it is not picky: it will thrive in both moist and dry soil, provided it is regularly watered during the first year.

Regarding maintenance, pruning with shears in late winter will refresh the plant by removing old leaves and make way for its delicate flowers to bloom for all to see. However, be cautious: pruning too early may result in freezing the young shoots, while pruning too late may risk "decapitating" them with the sharp blades. It is best to monitor the development of these young shoots to choose the best time to prune!

Pair this Epimedium with other shade-loving perennials for a border full of nuance: the shape of its foliage will contrast beautifully with that of ferns and, in moister soil, the colour of its foliage will harmonise nicely with that of hostas or heucheras.

Planting and care

Epimedium rubrum 'Galadriel' thrives in both fresh and drier soils; it can be planted in shade or partial shade, ideally in soil with a neutral pH (neither too acidic nor too alkaline) that is well-drained.

A woodland plant, it particularly appreciates humus-rich soils, so an annual addition of compost will be welcome. However, this plant easily adapts to any type of properly drained and cultivated soil.

Once established, which often takes some time and requires protection from invasive plants, and following regular watering during the first year, Epimedium tolerates temporary drought, which is common under trees in summer. Its maintenance consists of removing the withered foliage from the previous year at the end of winter before the flowers appear.
